ENVIRONMENT, ERGONOMICS AND FAMILY Consider your home workspace
Work environment
Where you set up your home office space matters. If possible, apply these three tips:
- Designate a specific place for your work.
This allows you to leave your work behind at the end of the day. A room with a door is ideal.
- Use a surface — any surface is better than none.
For the best ergonomics, your elbows should rest comfortably at a 90-degree angle with your shoulders relaxed. Usually, kitchen tables are too tall.
- Find a spot with enough light but not too much that it causes glare.
If you're near a window, sit perpendicular to it or close the blinds. No windows? Task lighting angled behind your screen reduces the stark contrast of your bright screen with a dark room.
Ergonomics
It’s the science of fitting work equipment to users’ needs.
The equipment setup in this visual is a good example you can follow. Ergonomic equipment aims to reduce discomfort and increase work efficiency.
To learn more, get training from Environmental Health and Safety.
Reach out before you feel pain! An ergonomics specialist dedicated to employees is here to help.
How it works:
1. Receive your consult by Zoom, email or phone
2. You’ll receive equipment recommendations
At that point, it’s up to you and your department to make purchases or not.
A dedicated space to work helps prevent injuries. Take some time to set up a workspace that's comfortable and free of tripping hazards.
If you are injured while working remotely, the protocol is the same as if you were on-site.
For serious and life-threatening injuries, immediately call 911.
For non-urgent injuries, report it to your supervisor and to Corvel’s 24/7 Workers Care hotline at 1-800-440-6285.
