Professional Summary/Summary of Qualifications (optional section): This is a useful section to highlight your accomplishments and skills as they relate to the position to which you are applying. It is also a wonderful place to provide years of experience. If the job requires 5 years’ experience, lead with that. If the job requires a specific certification, add that certification. This is valuable space in your resume. You are tempting the reviewer to read on.  

Example 1: Experienced Student Success Coach and mentor with 5 years of experience in higher education. Experience (required section): This section is in reverse chronological order. Start from the present and list your jobs that are relevant. If you have limited experience, then list all jobs.

  • Use bullet points to show your accomplishments and quantifiable achievements. Try not to just describe your job (filing, answering phone calls,). Instead, highlight the impact you made.  
  • If the job posting asks for certain skills, show you utilized these skills in this job.  
  • Use action verbs – Achieved, Established, Exceeded, Overhauled, Developed, Constructed, Supervised, Collaborated, Implemented and many more.

  • You can use the C.A.R. method to build stronger bullet points (Challenge, Action, Results). Feel free to research this method and apply it to your work history. Example: (Challenge was communicate compensation information). Crafted clear and concise communications for employees at all levels improving understanding of compensation policies and increasing employee engagement. 
  • Numbers are eye catching in a resume. Same Example: Crafted clear and concise communications for 500 employees at all levels improving understanding of compensation policies and increasing employee engagement quantified by 40% increase in positive feedback on employee survey. 

Education (required section): If you are a recent graduate, your education may go before your experience, especially if that education or certification is what qualifies you for the position. If you have work experience in the area, then experience would go first.
