Here is an outline of your process when you decide it is time to start applying internally.  HR Career Development can help walk you through these steps.   

Application preparation 

  • Ensure you meet the minimum qualifications for the position. 
  • Update your resume to reflect experience with the specific job requirements. 
  • Prepare a cover letter tailored to the job and department if optional or required. 
  • Arrange for references who can vouch for your abilities and performance. 

Current position performance: 

  • Confirm you have been in your current role for the required duration
  • Review your work performanceand achievements
  • Understand the salary range, compensation philosophy and typical hiring practices. 

Departmental research 

  • Research the department you are applying to, including its mission and goals. 
  • Prepare for interviews by anticipating questions and formulating responses. 
  • Maintain a positive attitudeand continue performing well in your current role

Interview process 

  • Be ready for phone or online interviews with behavior-based questions. 
  • Prepare for in-person or panel interviews to discuss your experience in depth. 
  • Dress for success by wearing business professional attire.  
  • Follow up with a thank you email after the interview. 

Managerial relationship 

  • Ensure you have a good relationship with your current manager. This person remains in your network after you change jobs.
