Personal leave
Vacation leave
The university provides vacation with pay to any regular staff employee with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater. Vacations are to be scheduled at times that are convenient to the department and with consideration of the employee’s preference.

Military leave
Paid parental leave
All regular staff employees who experience the birth or adoption of a child are eligible to apply for two work weeks of paid parental leave. This leave may be used in lieu of accrued Vacation Leave (VL) or Temporary Disability Leave (TDL). Paid parental leave is available for regular staff with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater and is available immediately upon hire.
Paid elder care leave
All regular staff employees who experience elder care needs are eligible to apply for one week of paid elder care leave. This leave may be used in lieu of accrued Vacation Leave (VL) or Temporary Disability Leave (TDL). Paid elder care leave is available for regular staff with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater and is available immediately upon hire.
Funeral leave
An employee with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater shall be granted funeral leave. Leave amount varies on relationship
Medical leave
Temporary disability leave (sick leave)
Temporary Disability Leave (TDL) is available for regular staff with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater. It provides leave for staff who have an illness or injury which prevents them from performing their jobs on a temporary basis, or to care for eligible family members.
Normally TDL must be used when an employee or a family member is sick. However, staff may take up to two TDL days per year as well-being days. These days must still be approved by their supervisor, but the days may be used for any purpose.
Family and Medical Leave
Recognizing the occurrence(s) of serious health conditions which involve either the University employee or a qualified family member, the University provides unpaid Family Medical leave of up to 12 weeks in a 12-month period.
Bone marrow or organ donation leaves
An employee with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater shall be granted bone marrow or organ donation leave.
Long-term total disability program
The university provides long-term disability benefits for eligible regular employees with a full-time equivalent of 0.75 or greater (includes WEPPs). This coverage is provided on the first day of the month after the employee completes one full year of service. The LTD program is intended to make monetary benefits available to an employee in the event of long-term permanent total disability and is not a job protection program.
Workers' compensation
Any university employee who is injured or incurs an occupational disease or death, normally without regard to fault, as a result of university employment, is covered by the Kentucky Worker’s Compensation Act, the University's Workers' Compensation Program, and the University of Kentucky Worker’s Care Program Managed Care Organization.
