HR Policy and Procedure #89: Bone Marrow or Organ Donation Leaves Revised April 12, 2018

Purpose
An employee with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 or greater shall be granted Bone Marrow or Organ Donation leave, with pay, in accordance with this policy.
 
Policy
An employee shall be allowed Bone Marrow or Organ Donation leave with pay. The leaves are as follows:

  • Bone Marrow Donation
    • An employee shall be allowed Bone Marrow leave up to five (5) working days to serve as a bone marrow donor for a bone marrow transplant if the employee provides the University with written medical certification issued by the employee’s health-care provider that the employee is to serve as a bone marrow donor.
  • Organ Donation
    • An employee shall be allowed Organ Donation leave up to thirty (30) working days to serve as an organ donor for a human organ transplant if the employee provides the University with written medical certification issued by the employee’s health-care provider that the employee is to serve as an organ donor. 
  • An employee who is granted a leave of absence pursuant to this section is entitled to receive normal pay and benefits without interruption during the leave of absence. The service of the employee is considered uninterrupted by the leave of absence.

Process
The department head is responsible for receiving requests for Bone Marrow or Organ Donation leave and scheduling time off, as appropriate. An employee shall notify the department as soon as possible of a request for Bone Marrow or Organ Donation leave.
Note:  An employee, who is not entitled to Bone Marrow or Organ Donation leave with pay or who needs additional time off for Bone Marrow or Organ Donation related matters, may request accrued vacation leave or if temporarily disabled, TDL. After accrued leaves are exhausted, an employee may request a special unpaid leave of absence.
