Do you need a work week schedule that better fits your life?

You may have the option to shift your regular schedule.

For example, this could be an hour or two earlier or later, or to compress your five-day work week into four longer days.

We provide the flexibility to define with your supervisor.

Common reasons for adjusted hours

  • Making your commute easier
  • Matching a child care pickup schedule
  • Aligning with productivity needs

Possibilities for adjusting your schedule

Compressed work week

A full-time employee scheduled for 40 hours per week could work four 10-hour days instead of five eight-hour days.

Arrive later, leave later

Instead of taking a full hour lunch break, an employee could reduce lunch to 30 minutes (the minimum required by law) and arrive at 9 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. and leave at 5:30 p.m.

Arrive earlier, leave earlier

Modifying an 8 a.m.-to-5 p.m. schedule, an employee could maintain eight hours a day by arriving at 7 a.m. and leaving at 4 p.m.

Keep in mind your schedule must align with core hours

Ask your supervisor about your area’s core hours

Know that our policy only supports adjusted schedules that align with periods of core working hours. For example, your supervisor may set core hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. because that time period is consistently busy with customer needs.

It’s up to your supervisor to determine the core working hours for your area when all employees need to be present, and this may be different across the university.

HR Policy & Procedure #70

Attendance/Hours of Work

“Flex-time will take place of the “typical” 7.5 or eight-hour work day, but will not affect the typical 37.5 or 40-hour work week.”

Use our proposal writer to further the conversation with your supervisor

After your initial conversation with your supervisor, it’s time to send them a written proposal. Our form helps you write your proposal, sends it to your supervisor and copies Human Resources for reference.

Flexible work

Upon discussion between supervisor and employee, an adjusted schedule may be possible in certain types of positions where a portion of work hours can be accomplished during non-traditional hours.
