Purpose
An employee is free to engage in political activities as long as the employee is able to do so within the law while meeting the obligations of his/her position at the University. When an employee is able to demonstrate that participating in a political campaign or holding a public office will not interfere with the employee’s job responsibilities or work schedule, the employee may do so without a leave of absence.
Policy

An employee may campaign for elective office without requesting a leave of absence providing activities do not interfere with the employee’s normal work schedule.
- An employee may request and be granted vacation time for campaigning activities.
- An employee who is unable to demonstrate that campaigning activities will not interfere with the employee’s normal work schedule and job responsibilities may request a leave of absence without pay.
Process
A request for leave without pay (see Human Resources Policy & Procedure 85.0 Special Leaves) for campaigning activities shall be submitted to the department in a timely manner.
