Policy |

84.1.1 |
A regular full-time or half-time staff employee shall be granted funeral attendance leave with pay as follows: |

84.1.1.1 |
A staff employee shall be allowed funeral attendance leave with pay for attendance to funeral matters up to three (3) working days for the death of a parent, brother, sister (including half brother and half sister), spouse, child, or other relatives for whom the staff employee is directly responsible. |

84.1.1.1.1 |
In cases requiring extensive travel time, the staff employee may be granted additional time off with pay. The total funeral attendance leave with pay shall not exceed five (5) days. |

84.1.1.2 |
In the case of the death of a direct descendant grandparent (of whatever degree), a grandchild, or an in-law relative of the degree indicated in 84.1.1.1, funeral attendance leave with pay may be granted up to one (1) day. |

84.1.1.2.1 |
In cases requiring extensive travel time, the staff employee may be granted additional time off with pay. The total funeral attendance leave with pay shall not exceed three (3) working days. |

NOTE: |
In the case of the death of a step-child for whom the employee is directly responsible, the time off shall be in accordance with 84.1.1.1. In the case of the death of a step-child for whom the employee is not directly responsible, the time off shall be in accordance with 84.1.1.2. |

In the case of the death of a step-parent who was and has been directly responsible for the staff employee, the time off is in accordance with 84.1.1.1. In the case of a step-parent who was and has not been directly responsible for the staff employee, the time off shall be in accordance with 84.1.1.2. |

In the case of the death of a step-brother or step-sister, with whom the employee shared the same home, the time off is in accordance with 84.1.1.1. In case of the death of a step-brother or step-sister, with whom the employee never shared the same home, the time off is in accordance with 84.1.1.2. |

84.1.1.3 |
A staff employee may be allowed funeral attendance leave with pay of up to one-half a working day, at the discretion of the department head, to attend the funeral service of other relatives (including, but not limited to aunt, uncle, cousin, niece, nephew, etc.), associates or close friends. |

NOTE: |
No additional travel time for extensive travel is allocated under 84.1.1.3. Attendance at a funeral requiring extensive travel would be in accordance with Policy Number 80.0: Vacation Leave or Policy Number 85.0: Special Leaves. |

84.1.1.4 |
The principle governing this policy for regular half-time staff employees is that half-time employees be granted leave to attend the funeral of a relative or others in accordance with 84.1.1.1, 84.1.1.2, and 84.1.1.3 regardless of the number of hours the employee was scheduled to work. The regular half-time employee shall receive leave with pay for the employee's scheduled hours that fall within the funeral leave period. |

NOTE: |
A staff employee, who is not entitled to funeral attendance leave with pay or who needs additional time off for funeral related matters, may use vacation leave with pay if appropriate or be granted leave without pay, with the approval of the department head. |

Delegation |

The department head is responsible for receiving requests for funeral attendance leave and scheduling time off, as appropriate. |

Procedure |

|
84.3.1 |
A staff employee desiring a funeral attendance leave shall notify the department head as soon as possible of such a request in order to ascertain the appropriate time necessary and to allow for departmental workload scheduling. |
