Learn more about our farms below!
We have a wide range of partner farm offerings.
Our CSA program has a wide range of partner offerings. For the 2024 CSA season, our farms were: Barr Farms, Cleav's Family Market, Elmwood Stock Farm, Flourishing Herbs, Hickory Grove Farm, Lazy Eight Stock Farm, Mustard Seed Farm, Old Homeplace Farm, Rains and Sun Hilltop Farm, Rootbound Farm, Sustainable Harvest Farm and the UK Organic Farming Unit. If you are an employee or retiree on a UK health insurance plan, you can use your voucher to pair with any of these farms.
What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is like a subscription to a farm. CSA shareholders purchase a share of a farm’s harvest before the season starts and commit to being a shareholder for the entire designated season. In return, shareholders will receive a weekly box or bag of farm vegetables and sometimes fruit and herbs as well.
The UK HR Health and Wellness CSA Voucher program helps make this choice easier for you! As a participant in this program, employees* and retirees** on a UK health plan receive either $100 or $200 vouchers toward the cost of a CSA share from one of our partner farms. As a participant in the voucher program, you will receive:
- A box of local vegetables (and occasionally fruits and other farm products) delivered weekly to a convenient pickup location that you choose.
- Opportunities to get to know your local farmers and learn more about where your food comes from.
- Seasonal tips and recipes for the produce in your weekly shares, join our dedicated Facebook group and subscribe to our blog.
* Please note this is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service and will be included as a fringe benefit for taxation on your UK paycheck.
**Please note this is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service and should be reported accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
What is a voucher?
The voucher pays for a portion of a CSA share from one of our partner farms. It does not cover the entire purchase price. Vouchers are offered in $100 and $200 amounts to be used accordingly toward the purchase of the corresponding share size.
- The $100 voucher can be used for the following sizes ONLY. Mini, Small, Peck. Not all farms offer a small size, so if you are in a smaller household of 1-2 people, please take this into account.
- The $200 voucher can be used for the following sizes ONLY. Half, Medium, Large, Regular, Half bushel, Full, Abundant, Extra-large, XL, Bushel, Robust. Essentially, you may use this voucher on any share. EXCEPT the smallest size offered by the farm. Cleav’s and UK Organic Farming Unit (aka “South Farm”) have one single share size. You can only use the $200 voucher toward shares from these farms. Be sure to claim the $200 voucher on your dashboard if you wish to partner with these farms.
You may only use the voucher toward the purchase of a share from one of our partner farms and only for the share size for which it is intended. The voucher has no cash value.
If you choose the wrong voucher for your needs, please email eldimartino@uky.edu to initiate a voucher swap.
How long does a CSA typically last?
Farms provide weekly farm shares throughout the Kentucky growing season of spring-fall. The duration and start/end dates vary by farm. Generally, an 18-22 week duration and May-October timeframe is common for our 2025 participating farms. When you become a CSA member, your farm will communicate this necessary information to you.
What is included in a weekly CSA share?
Shares vary based on the farm and the time of year. Farms grow various crops and each week different produce items are growing into and out of maturity. Many farms show examples of past shares on their websites and social media platforms. Please keep in mind that each CSA season can be different depending on several variables such as heat, rain, soil and labor, although every farm aims to deliver the highest quality weekly shares possible.
How much food is included in a weekly CSA share?
The quantity of produce in each CSA share varies by farm and by week. The average weekly share will offer a seasonal variety of items (5-9 in a small/mini share and 6-12 in a large/regular share). An "item" is sometimes a bunch, bundle or bag amount, not just a singular vegetable. Typically, a regular/full/large share is designed to supply two adults or a small household with most of their weekly produce needs, while a small/mini share is designed to supplement weekly produce needs for one to two adults. If you are new to CSA and unsure which size to choose, we recommend choosing a smaller share, as you can always supplement at a farmers market or buy more items to be added if your farm offers online shopping. We strongly suggest that you read the farm profiles on our CSA main page as well the individual farms’ websites to help you make the decision that is right for you.
How much does a CSA cost?
The cost of a CSA varies by farm and by the size of the share. Typically, without a voucher, the cost of a regular share ranges from about $540 to $1,200 (subtract $200 with voucher use) and a small share is about $360 to $900 (subtract $100 with voucher use).
Some farms even offer an extra-large share for larger households, so be sure to take note of that if you are feeding more people at home or splitting with another family! You would also use the $200 voucher if you choose to buy an extra-large share.
Why become a CSA member?
A CSA offers several unique benefits:
- You will experience the diversity of locally grown fresh produce.
- You get to know your farmer and how your food is grown. Some farms offer members-only access to tours, events and u-picks. If that access is important to you, you can choose your farm accordingly!
- Many farms offer customization features such as the ability to pause your share and either swap items in your share or buy more as needed.
- Farms offer many different pickup locations. You can choose the location that is right for you. You keep your food dollars in your community.
What happens if there is crop failure or bad weather?
CSA is a mutual commitment between a farm and its shareholders/members. CSA members share in the rewards of a great season and the risks that come with bad weather and pests. Participating farmers have been growing food for many seasons, and they typically grow a variety of crops. This decreases the likelihood that all crops will be ruined from a pest or weather problem, but be sure to read your farm’s CSA membership agreement to learn more about their individual policies and procedures.

Can I combine my voucher with my spouse's voucher toward the purchase of one share?
If two individuals (employee/employee, retiree/retiree or employee/retiree) are on two separate and independent UK medical health insurance plans AND are married or listed as sponsored dependents for one another, you may be able to combine vouchers towards the cost of one share. Spouses or partners who are on the same health insurance plan cannot claim two vouchers; there is only one voucher available per health insurance plan. Please email eldimartino@uky.edu to confirm eligibility and if this is a purchase option for you. Do not attempt to purchase your combined share before contacting Erica as you may not be eligible to combine your vouchers.
My friend and I both work at UK. Can we share a share?
Only two individuals (employee/employee, retiree/retiree, or employee/retiree) who are on two separate and independent UK medical health insurance plans AND are married or listed as sponsored dependents for one another may combine their vouchers to purchase one share. You can, of course, split a share with whoever you like, and they do not need to work at UK. It would be important and necessary, however, to buy your share using the name of an employee so that the single voucher is applied appropriately. Otherwise, you may not receive the discount correctly.
Can my friend/colleague/co-worker/family member give me their voucher?
No. Vouchers are non-transferable and must be in the name of the eligible employee or retiree (the one covered by the UK health insurance plan).
When will the voucher show up on my paycheck as taxable income?
The voucher will appear as taxable income on your pay stub in either March or May, depending on when you use the voucher for purchase.
