Transitioning from summer to back-to-school can be a challenging time for families. Back to school can look and feel different based on different factors including the age of your child and any concerns you have about the behavioral, social or academic needs of your child.

In addition, children gearing up for big transitions may especially be experiencing some nervousness.

"Parents may be wondering if their child will get lost trying to find their way through the new school, riding their new bus, etc. Everyone may have a mixture of dread, excitement and let’s get it over with,” said Azetta Beatty, manager of UK HR Work-Life. “I encourage parents to pause, reflect and consider how they can be engaged and support their children during this transitional time.”

Here are some ideas to help you and your child get off to a great start this new school year.

Let’s get ready:

  • Check in with your child.
  • Listen and discuss ways to get them ready physically and mentally.
  • Make sure you have after-school care.
  • Purchase necessary school and home supplies.
  • Schedule grooming necessities.
  • Make sure glasses fit well; contact lenses are ordered.
  • Check the fit of clothes and shoes.
  • Read all the announcements/emails from the school and teachers.
  • Submit all requested documents.
  • Sign up for school- and classroom-related apps or communication platforms.

Remember to keep an open line of communication with your child’s school, including teachers and administrators. Consider volunteering at the school, in your child’s classroom, with the PTA/PTSA or for special occasions.
