Did you say summer is almost over? No, say it’s not so. Don’t despair. You still have plenty of time to embrace the joys of summer. Plan a quick getaway or staycation, visit family or friends, go to the pool or beach, or visit local or regional attractions just to name a few.

Consider your resources, interests and the age of your child, then brainstorm on your own or with your child. The truth is only you can determine how to best spend your time and energy with your child.

Here are a few ideas that can be simple, but meaningful.

  • Schedule a “say yes” day or half a day
  • Plan a few “do nothing” days
  • Stay up late or sleep in
  • Take a day off work, for no reason at all (a great use of paid well-being days)
  • Watch your favorite movie or TV show
  • Try out a new activity or game
  • Read a new book (audiobooks count too)
  • Binge watch a TV show, movie or podcast
  • Take a walk or bike ride around your neighborhood
  • Visit some local parks

If you are a parent who feels like you need to do something productive with the rest of the summer before school starts, think of ways you can make these productive goals fun and engaging. Here are a few ideas to consider.

  • Review your child’s academic progress or grades from last year.
  • Help your child practice some academic or emotional regulation skills.
  • Introduce your child to a new way to stay organized.
  • Determine and plan your after-school care and activities.
  • Sort your child’s clothes, toys and games.

Remember, you have the power to contribute to your work-life harmony and well-being. Remind yourself that sometimes the small things are the big things. Whatever you choose to do in these last days of summer, enjoy it!
