Try these tips for a successful back-to-school experience
Parenting is such a journey. One of the biggest parts of this journey is watching your child grow from one year to the next and develop their own thoughts, personalities, hopes, dreams, and worries. Back to school is one of the busiest and expensive times of the year for parents. Most parents would agree that the commercials and ads come too soon; and the list of supplies is too long. Nonetheless, we must get ready to support our child’s academic, mental and emotional needs this school year.
The beginning of the school year can be exciting for some children and parents while anxiety-provoking for others. It comes with school supplies, new outfits, renewed routines, new and old friends, new teachers, expectations, and sometimes new schools. Remember to take it one day at a time. Monitor your own self-care along with your child’s this school year. Work with your child and the teachers to determine what will work best to ensure your child has a successful school year.
There are several ways to ensure your child gets off to a great start this new school year.
The big picture:
- Read the announcements/emails from the school and teachers.
- Submit all requested documents (such as technology agreement).
- Sign up for school and classroom related Apps or communication platforms.
- Learn about the school or district’s resources to support your child’s academic, mental, and social development.
After school starts (within 2-3 weeks):
- Ask your child how it is going? Ask what they think about the classroom set-up, teachers, students, assignments, etc.
- Send a note to all your child’s teachers introducing yourself and asking them to contact you anytime if they have any questions, successes, or concerns with your child.
