Taking a Mindful Summer Break Get awe inspired!
It's that time of year, end of school, maybe things are slowing down at the office and you finally have time to get away. Often we feel like we should keep working harder and longer; the truth is, we work better after a break, whether it is a 5-minute break or 5-day break.
Taking time off during the summer is more than a seasonal tradition—it’s a scientifically supported strategy for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Research consistently shows that intentional breaks from routine and work are essential for restoring cognitive function, reducing burnout, and enhancing overall life satisfaction.
A 2018 study published in Stress & Health found that vacationers experienced significant reduction in stress and improvements in mood, with effects lasting up to weeks after their return. During the summer, warm weather, longer days and the conditions for outdoor activities and social gatherings are the perfect recipe for increased mental health and social connection.
However, you can create your break is what matters most. You might schedule sun shine breaks in the day where you step out of your office for a few minutes or you plan a 5-day vacation. Completely disengaging from your normal routine and pressure allows your whole body and mind to recalibrate.
Try setting up your life to “mindfully” take a break, not just physically but mentally. This includes setting boundaries with work commitments, being present with family or in nature, and engaging in nurturing practices like journaling, meditation or fun. Job satisfaction increases if employees are encouraged to disconnect during time away from the office fully.
I believe a mindful summer break isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. It renews mental clarity, strengthens emotional resilience, and fosters a more sustainable approach to both work and life.
