When someone is living with a dementia-related illness, changes in their senses, judgment, and ability to complete complex tasks can sometimes make everyday situations more challenging, including safely operating a firearm. These changes can create real safety concerns for the person, their family, and others in the home. At the same time, letting go of familiar activities can be deeply personal and emotional, especially when those activities have been part of a person’s life for many years. This presentation will give caregivers compassionate, practical ways to begin these sensitive conversations while supporting the safety, dignity, and well-being of everyone involved. This workshop may be especially helpful for families caring for a loved one with dementia in a home where young children are present.
