Living with AI: Three Visions for Coexistence

Nearly four years after the widespread release of generative AI tools, the opportunities and challenges that AI poses extend well beyond the use of chatbots. As our lived experiences more frequently intersect with AI systems and infrastructures, the nature of work, education, and civic life may change significantly. In this talk we'll unpack the different meanings of "AI," examine emerging capabilities and applications, and explore visions for coexistence with AI—and, more importantly, with each other—in these areas of life. Come prepared for some futuring with an eye on grounded strategy as we stand to make consequential decisions about when, how, and why we engage with AI.

Trey Conatser, PhD, is assistant provost for teaching and learning and directs the UK Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT). As a digital humanist, educational developer, and institutional leader he has worked with individuals and organizations on AI literacy, fluency, policy, and strategy. He has given workshops and talks on AI in work, education, and life across UK and at a range of national venues with publications forthcoming in edited collections on teaching AI and rhetoric and/of AI. Trey frequently contributes to media coverage of AI and higher education and has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses at UK focusing on humanistic and educational perspectives on AI. He holds a PhD in English from The Ohio State University.
