CAREERS

You’re either born with the power to influence others or not. Some people just have the gift to convince others of their point of view or to get them to do what they want, right? Influencing is basically magic don’t you think? Wrong! Influencing is a set of skills that anyone can learn. While it takes practice, and maybe even a few mistakes, everyone has the power to influence. At its core, influencing is the ability to affect the thoughts, behaviors or decisions of others through communication, persuasion and relationship-building—without relying on formal authority. This skill is essential in leadership and teamwork, and it involves emotional intelligence, credibility and trust, rather than control or coercion. According to the Center for Creative Leadership, influencing skills are among the top five predictors of leadership success. Gallup reports that managers who use influence over authority boost employee engagement by up to 33%. A McKinsey study found that change initiatives are 4.5 times more likely to succeed when leaders use effective influence tactics such as storytelling, listening and stakeholder mapping. When leaders influence rather than dictate, employee buy-in increases by over 60%. The power of influencing is immense. After this session, you will leave with a set of tools and action steps that you can use to more effectively influence others and, in turn, reap the positive organizational outcomes.
