Elder care presentation on how dementia can impact our five senses
Over time, our five senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste – can change for a person living with dementia. Different parts of the brain are responsible for each of the five senses and will be affected differently. These changes can affect our loved one’s behavior, their ability to communicate and their relationship with us. Making changes in our loved ones’ environment and daily activities is key to helping them adjust. Dr. Elizabeth Rhodus, a clinical occupational therapist and researcher at UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, will discuss how sensation and perception are altered with the onset of cognitive impairment.
