Elder care presentation on professional guardianship
Presenter: Amy Dougherty, Elder Law Attorney, Bluegrass ElderLaw
The Netflix film, I Care A Lot, is a disturbingly dark comedy based on real-life events, showing the exploitation and abuse of seniors. Marla, the main character in the film, is a professional guardian. Her job is to oversee and make all the legal and financial decisions for seniors who are deemed unable to make decisions for themselves. Marla works with a corrupt doctor who targets seniors, then gets an inept judge to appoint her guardian. She moves her victims into a nursing home and sells their assets for her own personal gain. Sadly, in the end, the lure of money wins out over care and compassion.
Amy will talk about how this can happen in the real world, and what you can do to prevent something similar from happening to you or your loved ones.
