Tips to maximize your experience at the UK Job Fair

Research Opportunities
  • Learn more about working at the University of Kentucky and why UK was recently ranked No.6 on the 2023 list of America’s Best Large Employers by Forbes.
  • Review the UK Jobs website to research the types of positions that are available and determine what opportunities you might be interested in.
Plan Ahead
  • Gather any items you want to bring with you the day of the event such as copies of your resume. It is recommended to bring multiple copies of your resume to share with areas that you are interested in.
  • Determine what you will wear to the event. We suggest business casual, however, you are welcome to dress casually if you are more comfortable. There is no formal dress code requirement.
  • Ensure you know how to get to the event and leave with plenty of time to arrive.
  • Develop a one-minute “pitch” that highlights your experience and key benefits that you can offer to departments.
  • Think of some questions you want to ask departments when you speak with them.
  • Even if a department you desire to work for isn’t currently recruiting, it is still important to meet with them. You never know when a position may suddenly open up.
Set reasonable expectations
  • Because every department is unique, each one may have different procedures for how they interact with you.
  • Some may have positions they are looking to fill quickly. Others may be interested in meeting candidates to consider for the future.
  • Just like you are trying to make the most of your time at a job fair, departments want to maximize theirs and interact with multiple candidates.
Network with departments
  • By speaking with different departments, you will learn more about the variety of job opportunities that the university offers and what positions might fit your needs the best.
  • Don’t be stressed, the job fair is an informal opportunity to learn more about the job opportunities available. Departments are excited to speak with you!
  • Collect information from the departments that you are interested in. Many departments will have information or handouts available at their table for you to take home with you.
Follow-up
  • Be sure to apply to any position you are interested in on the UK Jobs website.
  • If you receive contact information from a department you are interested in, send a thank you note to make yourself stand out.
