Purpose

An employee is free to engage in political activities as long as the employee is able to do so while meeting the obligations of his/her position at the University. When an employee is able to demonstrate that participating in a political campaign or holding a public office will not interfere with the employee’s job responsibilities, the employee may do so without a leave of absence.

Policy

1) An employee may campaign for elective office without requesting a leave of absence providing activities do not interfere with the employee’s normal work schedule.

  1. An employee may request and be granted vacation time for campaigning activities.
  2. An employee who is unable to demonstrate that campaigning activities will not interfere with the employee’s normal work schedule and job responsibilities may request a leave of absence without pay.

Process

A request for leave without pay (see Human Resources Policy & Procedure 85.0 Special Leaves) for campaigning activities shall be submitted to the department in a timely manner.
