84.1 Policy
84.1.1 A regular full-time or half-time employee shall be granted funeral leave with pay as follows:
84.1.1.1 An employee shall be allowed funeral leave with pay for attendance to funeral matters up to five (5) working days for the death of a parent, brother, sister, spouse, child, (includes steps, halves of the same relationship), any other person who resides in the employee’s household, or other persons with whom the employee has an "in loco parentis" relationship.
NOTE: “In loco parentis” means the employee has the day-to-day responsibilities for the care and financial support of a child or persons who had such a responsibility for the employee when the employee was a child. A biological or legal relationship is not necessary.
84.1.1.1.1 In cases requiring extensive travel time, the employee may be granted additional time off with pay. The total funeral leave with pay shall not exceed seven (7) working days.
84.1.1.2 In the case of the death of a direct descendant grandparent (of whatever degree), a grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, or an in-law relative of the degree indicated in 84.1.1.1, funeral leave with pay may be granted up to two (2) working days.

84.1.1.2.1 In cases requiring extensive travel time, the employee may be granted additional time off with pay. The total funeral leave with pay shall not exceed four (4) working days.
NOTE: In the case of the death of a step-child for whom the employee is directly responsible, the time off shall be in accordance with 84.1.1.1. In the case of the death of a step-child for whom the employee is not directly responsible, the time off shall be in accordance with 84.1.1.2.

NOTE: In the case of the death of a step-parent who was and has been directly responsible for the employee, the time off is in accordance with 84.1.1.1. In the case of a step-parent who was and has not been directly responsible for the employee, the time off shall be in accordance with 84.1.1.2.

NOTE: In the case of the death of a step-brother or step-sister, with whom the employee shared the same home, the time off is in accordance with 84.1.1.1. In case of the death of a step-brother or step-sister, with whom the employee never shared the same home, the time off is in accordance with 84.1.1.2.

84.1.1.3 An employee may be allowed funeral leave with pay of up to one-half a working day, at the discretion of the department head, for other relatives, associates or close friends.
NOTE: No additional travel time for extensive travel is allocated under 84.1.1.3. Attendance at a funeral requiring extensive travel would be in accordance with HRP&P 80.0 or HRP&P 85.0.
84.1.1.4 The principle governing this policy for regular half-time employees is that half-time employees be granted leave to attend the funeral of a relative or others in accordance with 84.1.1.1, 84.1.1.2, and 84.1.1.3 regardless of the number of hours the employee was scheduled to work. The regular half-time employee shall receive leave with pay for the employee's scheduled hours that fall within the funeral leave period.
NOTE: An employee, who is not entitled to funeral leave with pay or who needs additional time off for funeral related matters, may use vacation leave with pay if appropriate or be granted leave without pay, with the approval of the department head.
84.1.2 A “day” for funeral leave purposes is defined as the number of hours an employee works in a regularly scheduled work-week, divided by five (5).
84.2 Delegation
The department head is responsible for receiving requests for funeral leave and scheduling time off, as appropriate.
84.3 Procedure
84.3.1 A staff employee desiring funeral leave shall notify the department head as soon as possible of such a request in order to ascertain the appropriate time necessary and to allow for departmental workload scheduling.
