Your supervisor and/or other department representative(s) will meet with you to inform you of the position elimination decision and explain why it was necessary. He or she will summarize assistance available to you in regard to your benefits and your job search (or retirement options).

Decisions regarding position eliminations, though difficult for all involved, are based on a number of factors. In the current budget environment, such decisions are in many cases driven by financial considerations. Considerations regarding specific positions include job descriptions (including major job responsibilities), affected employees’ length of service at UK and documented work performance. For more details on UK policy regarding position elimination, click here.

Before the effective date of your position elimination, you will receive a written position elimination notice from your supervisor.

Below, we’ve highlighted some next steps we recommend.

Schedule a meeting with UK Career Employment for help with your UK job search.

An Employment representative will help review your resume, discuss job search and application strategies, and explain how you can identify yourself on UK applications as a displaced employee for consideration by UK hiring officials. If possible, bring the following to your meeting:

  • Your most current resume and application
  • A list of UK jobs you may be interested in

If you do not have a resume or are not sure how to find open positions, the representative will work with you to develop or update your resume and online application – and to review open positions at the University.

To schedule your meeting, contact Jeremy McKinley, Employment Consultant: 859-257-7812,

Apply for Unemployment Benefits.

In most cases, position eliminations are driven by budget or business decisions and employees are separated from work through no fault of their own. In these cases, employees affected may apply for unemployment benefits, which usually are available for up to 26 weeks (may vary depending on economic conditions).

Important! When applying for unemployment benefits, use the following “employer address” on unemployment application paperwork to ensure a timely and accurate response to your claim:

Employer Address
University of Kentucky
109 Scovell Hall
Lexington, KY 40506
