Supervisory Training
Human Resources Training & Development offers two types of supervisory Training Programs: SuperVision and Elements.
Introduction
At times, supervisors come into positions having already developed strong skills through formal education or experience. At the University of Kentucky, opportunities are provided for a supervisor to add to previously acquired skills and knowledge.
SuperVision is a training program designed by HR Training & Development especially to equip supervisors with the skills and knowledge to manage people and function effectively. It is the most comprehensive, work-oriented supervisory training program ever offered at the University.
Goals
- To develop a staff of highly skilled and competent supervisors who understand and manage human and capital resources in a strategic rather than reactive fashion.
- To assist supervisors in the recognition and proper application of University policies and procedures.
- To provide supervisors with some of the basic supervisory skills in order to build more confident and self-motivated employees.
- To contribute to the University's overall mission of providing excellent instruction, modern research, and meaningful service.
Eligibility
SuperVision is a mandatory training program for all newly hired or promoted supervisors. Employees are mandated by the President to attend SuperVision within the first 90 days of employment or promotion. A person is considered a supervisor if they are directly responsible for hiring, assigning and reviewing of work, and conducting performance appraisals of one or more employees. Exceptions to this can only be granted by the Human Resources Manager of the HR T&D unit.
SuperVision or Elements?
Please answer the following questions to determine which Supervisory Training Program you need to attend to.
- Have you been responsible for hiring employees?
- Have you conducted performance evaluations?
- Have you administered corrective action for an employee?
If you can answer "yes" to these questions, you qualify for an abbreviated version of SuperVision known as Elements.
